Ohio State coach Ryan Day said Monday that he expects quarterback Justin Fields to play in the national title game against Alabama next Monday night.
Fields hit a side at the end of the first half against Clemson in the semi-final football playoff semifinals in the St Lustet Sugar Bowl, but remained in the game. After that, Fields said he took an injection to continue playing but was in pain whenever he threw. He said he was not diagnosed for a specific type of injury.
On a zoom call Monday, Day would not reveal the nature of the injury but said Ohio State would practice as usual and Fields expects to play in Miami on Monday night.
“Justin is a competitive guy, he wasn’t going to come on the field,” Day said. “That’s the way he’s wired. It was a pretty amazing performance. The next day, his comment to me was that he felt better waking up in the morning than expected. We’ll continue to work through the week and have a great week. Prepare and Get ready to play on Monday night. “
In a 49-28 win over the Tigers, Fields threw a Sugar Bowl-record six touchdown passes and passed 385 yards.
