Officials report about 30,000 new cases in two days – deadline

The ongoing coronavirus epidemic continues to present a holiday season, once joyous and bright, a period of darkness and loss, with public health officials in Los Angeles confirming 29,464 new Covid-19 cases in just two days.

Officials have confirmed 13,185 and five deaths for Saturday and 15,538 cases and 131 deaths for Friday. In Los Angeles County, 6,770 people are currently hospitalized for Covid-19. According to Public Health, the number of deaths reported on Saturday is low due to the reporting lag associated with spectrum service outages and the Christmas holiday.

To date, health officials have detected a total of 672,069 Kovid-19 cases in LA County and recorded a total death toll of 9,438.

The latest report comes just days after both LA County and California passed terrible targets this holiday season. LA surpassed 9,000 on Tuesday. On Friday, California became the first state to surpass 2 million Covid-19 cases and its remaining ICU capacity dropped to zero.

Despite the steady increase in Covid-1 cases, which could increase in the coming weeks due to holiday trips, public health officials urge LA County to use a similar strategy extended since the onset of the epidemic: avoid encounters with outsiders, properly mask faces around others. Wear and maintain physical distance whenever possible.
