San Antonio – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Baxter County Judge Nelson Waffle updated the community about local response to COVID-19 in their daily briefings Friday night.
Nirenberg has reported a total of 58,039 cases of COVID-19 and a total of 1,138 deaths in Bexar County as of Friday, an increase of 103 new cases. No new deaths were reported today.
The 7-day moving average of the case is 150.
City officials also reported that 196 patients are hospitalized, 76 are in the intensive care unit and 31 are on ventilators. There are 12% staff beds available and 71% ventilators available.
Here are more features of today’s briefing:
- The city will offer PCR tests for asymptomatic residents at some of the city’s free test sites from Monday. These sites include the Cooler Community Center on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday at the Ramirez Community Center from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the Freeman Coliseum on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Testing is a partnership between Metro Health, Community Labs and Biobridge Global.
- Mayor Nirenberg said asymptomatic testing sites would not require the appointment or insurance of any doctors. Tests are free for people.
- During the gentle projection of the asymptomatic test, the examinations will be conducted by appointment only. However, according to Metro Health officials, walk-ups may be allowed later.
- Mayor Nirenberg and Judge Wolfe also shared their thoughts and prayers with President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who have been diagnosed with Covid-19. As a precaution, the president was taken to a military hospital on Friday afternoon and his symptoms are still being labeled “mild.”
- With the start of the flu season, Judge Wolf says now is not the time to put your guard down. With Flu and Covid-19 active at the same time, the judge said he hoped Governor Greg Abbott would not ease sanctions from now on and that both should remain vigilant against the virus.
