Many of us have assumed that Bayware is going to announce the Mass Effect Trilogy collection during N7 Day today, but we didn’t expect this other news: a new Mass Effect game is in development.
The details on the project are very few, but Bioware is working on the “next chapter of the Mass Effect Universe” and will feature the company’s “P te team”. It is unclear who will be involved in the project, as original creative director Casey Hudson now heads the entire studio. Collective Impact: Andromeda Creative Director Walk Walters still seems to be in the company and served as a writer on the original games as well as the Jade Empire.
Andromeda was not as well received as previous games, with directed criticism on its story, character animation and quest design. GameSpot’s Mass Effect: In the Andromeda review, critic Scott Butterworth also found technical problems and disliked those characters.
The studio is still in the very early stages of the next Mass Effects game, so it’s unlikely that we’ll see more of it in years to come. Meanwhile, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is set to release in the spring of 2021 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, with enhancements available on the Xbox Series X and PS5. It will show improvements in things like character models dales, textures and shades, but will not drastically change the experience compared to the original triangle.
