The U.S. Forest Service said the 39-year-old firefighter “died while engaged in firefighting operations.”
“Charlie was a very respected leader who was always present in his team and for his crew during difficult times,” Vicky Christian, chief of the U.S. Forest Service, said in a press release.
He added, “Our hearts go out to Charlie’s loved ones, colleagues, friends and Big Bear’s hot shots. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers,” he added.
Morton has been working as a firefighter for the past 18 years, including 14 years in the Forest Service, according to the publication.
He is survived by his wife and daughter, his parents, two brothers and cousins.
“He loves it and will miss it,” Morton’s family said in a press release. “She rests easily in heaven with her baby boy.”
