Dalton, Ga. (AP) – Authorities on Monday searched for two Texas fugitives accused of shooting a deputy in Dalton, Georgia.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Monday that Dalton Potter, 29, fired multiple shots at Whitfield County Sheriff’s Deputy Darrell Hackney from inside his vehicle. Hackney was struck, but his ballistic vest could save him, the GBI said in a statement. Authorities described Potter as “armed and dangerous.”
The potter was intercepting the stolen trailer and was pulled over by deputies before a gunshot was fired around midnight, officials said.

Hackney and another deputy were on fire, but Potter drove south on International 75. He crashed the truck and fled into the woods on foot, the GBI said. The agency said the stolen trailer was found in the streets south of I-75 near the Whitefield-Gordon County Line.
State agents were looking for him, saying he was armed and dangerous.
Potter is facing charges of assaulting a deputy, GBI spokeswoman Nellie Mile said Monday afternoon.

The GBI later said it was looking for another Texas fugitive – Jonathan Hoesmer, 47 – who said he was also involved in the shooting. Officials said charges were pending against Hosher, who appeared in surveillance footage taken near the site of the truck crash. They did not immediately release additional details about Homer’s involvement.
Dalton is about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Atlanta.
