Observations from day 3 of training camp

2. Chubb leaves the practice

Browns Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb is under evaluation for a possible concussion.

Chubb completed half the practice off the field with a coach on Monday. His last game of the day saw him get a screenshot in a team period.

Chubb is off to one of the best seasons by a run back in Browns franchise history. He rushed for 1,494 yards – second-most in the NFL, fourth-most in franchise history – and eight touchdowns.

3. Great opportunities all over the field

The first day in pads provided some extensive opportunities for a number of players competing for roles on their respective sides of the ball.

Security Karl Joseph, who was recently removed from the physical inability to perform list, did not participate in Monday’s practice. That meant extensive first-team snaps for second-round rookie Grant Delpit, who posed as both a free and strong safety during parts of Monday’s practice. In an interview Friday, Delpit said he would learn both spots. On Monday, he played both.

“I’m not really worried about the exact place I need to make an impact,” Delpit said. “I’m just ready to fit in the defense scheme, and we’ll install that now.”

With Jarvis Landry sidelined Monday, JoJo Natson continued to receive some snaps with the official of the first team. Moved on to return duties with the Rams over the past two seasons, Natson has already made a handful of plays as a wide receiver in the first few days of training camp.

Chad Thomas, who is coming off a solid 2019 campaign, is in for Myles Garrett as the Pro Bowl pass rusher recovers from a hamstring injury.

Monday served as Day 3 with the offensive line of the first team for rookie Nick Harris, who filled in for veteran center JC Tretter.

“It’s a great opportunity to throw into the fire,” Harris said before Monday’s practice. “That’s how you learn best. That’s how you get the best reps against that on your own. I’m absolutely happy to have the chance to get my feet wet and go out there with the boys.”

4. Here and there

  • WR Taywan Taylor was at the receiving end of one of the best offensive games of the day, dragging in a pass at the sideline in one of the last team periods of the day. Taylor did not play much in his first season with the Browns, but he has been proven to be productive in the past. He caught 37 passes in 2018 for 466 yards with the Titans.
  • Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt called up the plays in the first days of practice. Stefanski said the plays were pre-scripted, and the team will announce if Stefanski or Van Pelt will name plays this season at a later date.
