The University of New York welcomes students back to their Manhattan campus on Wednesday – but, like the school’s coronavirus security plan, scientists are required to test for the virus upon arrival.
A mix of international students and those coming from state-designated coronavirus hotspots arrive this week – two weeks earlier than usual to allow time for their mandatory 14-day quarantine, according to NYU spokesman John Beckman.
“This week marks the beginning of the measured, prudent, slow return of students to the NYU campus, which the University is conducting in accordance with a transparently developed and comprehensive health and safety plan that emphasizes safety, academia and flexibility, “Beckman said in a statement on Wednesday.
The early arrivals may only leave their bedrooms for medical visits or collect their three daily meals from the hallway.
In two weeks, students from the tri-state region will arrive on campus.
NYU, like most universities and colleges, have created personalized classes over the past semester and switched to distance learning about coronavirus concerns.
The university in May indicated students would be able to return this fall.
Whether NYU can successfully conduct personal classes for the semester remains to be seen.
Other major universities across the country, including the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, had their plans to hold personal classes foil after campus-linked coronavirus outbreaks.
