The New York Police Department explained why a female protester was grabbed off the street and put in an unmarked truck on Tuesday, after questions and a backlash on social media.
The woman in question was wanted for damaging the police cameras.
“Regarding a video on social media that took place at 2 Ave and 25 St, a woman detained in a van without identification was searched for damaging police cameras during 5 separate criminal incidents in and around City Hall Park and the surrounding area “The NYPD News reported. tweet read. “The agents who arrested him were robbed with stones and bottles.”

The department defended the use of unmarked vehicles, tactics that civil liberties advocates have called “indefensible” and “abusive.”
“When Warrant Squad officers detained the woman in a gray New York police minivan tonight, they were robbed with rocks and bottles. The Warrant Squad uses unmarked vehicles to effectively locate wanted suspects,” the statement read. another tweet.
“When she was placed in the unmarked gray minivan of the Warrant Squad, she was behind a cordon of New York police officers wearing bright blue and yellow uniform shirts to help effect the arrest,” the thread continued.

A short video of the incident posted on Twitter appears to show a water bottle thrown at the police. Several users on the platform expressed outrage and there were protests in Manhattan on Tuesday night.
A total of 12 people were arrested at the scene, including the woman in the van, according to the New York Post.
