Nvidia’s next high-end RTX GPU – possibly the Nvidia RTX 3080 – would perhaps come closer to release. This is according to registration footage from South Korea, which suggests that a launch is immediately prior to an Nvidia event scheduled for Sept. 1.
A report of Videocardz says the Korean National Radio Research Bureau has certified a board named PG133A. This board is believed to be the founding edition of the rumored RTX 3080 Ti (as RTX 3090) that will be the flagship of NVIDIA’s successor to the RTX 2000 line.
Rumors have been rife regarding Nvidia’s next generation of enthusiast-class GPUs. However, very few concrete details have come to light. Even the official name for the Ampere lineup is a mystery.
Some say the flagship card will follow the naming scheme that Nvidia has been using for years and are called the RTX 3080 Ti. Others, however, suggest that the card will take off from the Ti branding and debut as the RTX 3090. It is not clear at this point what direction Nvidia will take, but details should come soon to help us resolve the issue.
In the two years since the RTX 2000 series arrived, not many games have taken advantage of the raytracing capabilities introduced with the cards. Despite the raw horsepower of RTX 2080 Ti, it even wrestles with raytracing, while a playable framerate is kept at resolutions above 1080p. Technologies like DLSS have helped reduce these performance issues, but gamers are frustrated to have compromises when owning Nvidia’s most powerful enthusiast GPU.
One of the biggest questions that revolves around the RTX 3080 Ti / RTX 3090 is whether it has the power to provide raytracing at UHD without the need to sacrifice framerate or other aspects of graphics fidelity. With the upcoming PS5 en Xbox Series X gaming consoles with DXR support, we may finally see a respectable number of titles that benefit from raytracing.
Nvidia’s high-end cards offer a high price, and that’s rumored to continue with upcoming GPUs. That performance per dollar for the RTX 3080 Ti / RTX 3090 will be a major concern for potential buyers.
We probably won’t have to wait long to get the details on Nvidia’s upcoming GPUs. If the PG133A really is the RTX 3080 Ti / RTX 3090, it’s in line with the countdown Nvidia posted on Twitter and the GeForce event set for the September 1 noon EDT. That’s a little over a week away until we can calm these rumors and see what’s really going on.
