If you use a vase and need to take your eyes off the road to control your music with your map, a new update is starting that will allow you to spend more time and more time driving than that touchscreen. MCummers Wayze is reporting that Apple has begun rolling out the CarPlay Dashboard support, which will allow you to view directions on CarPlay’s home screen, along with media controls, C, lander events and more. When I heard about it, I ran to my car and, sure, the directions of the vase appeared on the home screen.
The company began beta testing late last month, but the CarPlay dashboard has been for Apple Pulse users since the release of iOS 13 (although since iOS 13.4 it has only been open to third-party developers). Integration for driving safety is a win-win, as the golden rule for car UI is basically “you see and touch the screen as little as possible.”
Before this update, if you want to change the song you are playing, you have to go to the Music app, press the Next button, then go back to Vase. It can be anywhere from 3 to 6 taps on the screen, depending on whether the app next to the vase is in the launcher or not. That’s a lot, especially if you’re going 70 miles an hour. Now, you can have both Waze, the next turn you need to take, and there is music control on the same screen and it will take only one tap to change the song.
Keeping the safety theme in mind, the update also includes lane guidance, a feature that can tell you in advance which lane you should be on to exit your next turn or freeway. The moments I travel on this occasion should help reduce the “should be four-way from a quarter mile”. Happy (and safe) driving!
