Not under the San Mateo County Shelter Order; Shutdown – Supervisor calls for NBC Bay Area

San Mateo County supervisors say the county should connect with others in the bay area and not wait for state orders to close.

As of Friday, the county needs only six available beds in intensive care units to go into life-saving mode, Supervisor David Canepa said.

But the county remains open in terms of outdoor dining, hair salons and other businesses that are restricted to other counties in the area.

“And what we’ve done now is we’ve created a regional hub for people to come to visit us, and it’s not cold,” he said.

Troy Morris said at the Captain’s Freshshop that he’s seen a lot of out-of-towners lately.

“We met a lot of people from different places: San Jose, Hayward, San Francisco, a couple of Modestos,” he said.

As of Friday morning, the count of ICU beds in the two areas, by county, was as follows:

  • Almeida County: 75
  • San Francisco: 45
  • Santa Clara: 34
  • Contra Costa: 33.

Napa, Solano, Sonoma and Marine counties each have less than 15 beds available.

The remaining ICU capacity is what statistical health officials continue to monitor. If the rate in the two area area, which includes Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, falls below 15%, the government will enforce Gavin News’ regional investment-domestic order, and close many businesses.

Canepa says his county now needs shelter in place.

He said, “We need to connect with others in order to stay-at-home, and we should do it now because that’s the responsible thing to do. San Mateo County is no island.”

Earlier this week, 63 beds were available in Santa Clara County. The number has sunk to just 38 open beds in a single day and is now at 34.
