Dear Sofie Linde
Thank you for having the courage to speak up. We have been watching from the sidelines long enough and now we are talking to you.
He tells of how he experienced a sexist culture among some men when he started in the media industry.
You’re right. We also experience it.
You say there is still reason to tell the younger generation that you can say no, because the culture still exists among some men.
You’re right. We also experience it.
We have all experienced it to a greater or lesser extent during our careers. Inappropriate comments about our appearance or clothing. Insidious messages. Cross-border physical behavior. Warnings that there are some men to avoid for Christmas breakfast.
It happened once. It is happening all the time.
Many have asked you for answers about who is “the great canyon of television”. You have insisted from the beginning that you do not mean that because it is not just about the cross-border behavior of a single man 12 years ago.
You’re right. The debate should not end there.
It goes far beyond a single episode and a single person. We know. Our wish is to move the debate away from whether it is happening and instead talk about what is happening and what we must do together to stop it.
We are told that the door is always open. That we should turn to management if we experience something cross-border. But in that call lies the whole challenge, because why aren’t the cross-border men you’re talking to? The responsibility to stop this rests primarily with those who do not know where the limits are going.
And then it is the workplaces that will create a clear framework that will make it safe for a young woman to speak and speak out loud without fear for her career. And to us who witness something but say nothing.
Those who believe that this sexist culture no longer exists are wrong. Everyday sexism is still found among some men in the media industry, but also in other industries and in other types of workplaces. Unfortunately, a lot of people still think “it’s just that,” and that’s the culture where sexist comments aren’t really seen as an issue we want to deal with.
You’re right, Sofie Linde. We will speak out loud about the sexism that is taking place so we can figure out how to bring it to life.
