The tragic incident took place in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area of Arizona in the United States.
The national park is a popular getaway for hikers and tourists, and is known for its rock-shaped landscape. The views of the Colorado River are spectacular.
35 meters of free fall
But on Sunday, October 4, things went wrong. According to a press release from the National Park Service (NPS), a 25-year-old man was pronounced dead after being found under the steep side of the mountain.
It is estimated that the man first fell some 35 meters down, before the journey continued up the mountainside.
A police officer who rappelled down towards the injured hiker could do little to save the life of the 25-year-old, who likely died instantly.
The deceased identifies himself as Orlando Serrano-Arzola, 25, of Phoenix, Arizona.
Human remains found
During the complicated rescue operation, skeletal remains were found. Now it is confirmed that they are human remains.
Therefore, the police have launched an investigation to find out who the remains belong to, reports CNN.
The fall accident will be the thirteenth death at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area so far this year, Fox10 writes.
