Norwegian students in Denmark could be happy to spend ten days in expensive quarantine hotels on Wednesday, when they return home for the Christmas holidays.

The government also introduced exemptions for Norwegian students in the Nordic countries, who are registered in their respective countries of study.

But other Norwegians living in the Nordic countries must stay in quarantine hotels upon arrival in Norway. It has caused more people to react:

– You are no less contagious because you are a student, and many of us still lack a professional health justification for this measure, says Gina Rosland Eide (32) to NRK.

She emphasizes that she supports students in Denmark to obtain exceptions, but does not understand why the same does not apply to her and other Norwegian workers in the country.

– We only want access to our own country

Eide herself has lived in Denmark since 2011, when she started studying there. Since then, he got a job and settled in the neighboring countries of Norway.

But Eide and her boyfriend must now pay 10,000 crowns for a quarantine hotel stay and take time off at least ten days before Christmas Eve, if they want to attend the Christmas celebration at the family’s home in Bergen .

– It feels very boring. “We have been isolated from our families in Norway for a long time, and it is sad to think of celebrating Christmas in Denmark without the family,” says Eide.

WANTS A HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Gina Rosland Eide has lived in Denmark since 2011. She says she misses a health professional justification for quarantined hotels.

She and several other Norwegian employees in Denmark now want the same exception that students get.

– We only want access to our own country, says Eide.

Since you are not required to say whether you are moving abroad, there is no general description of how many Norwegian citizens are living abroad, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs NRK.

There are about 10,000 members on the Facebook group “Norwegians in Copenhagen”. In the group, several are frustrated at having to stay in quarantined hotels over Christmas.

– I think someone has misunderstood

– Here I think someone has misunderstood the rules. It is the case that Norwegian international students are normally registered in Norway when, for example, they are on an exchange abroad. But in the Nordic countries, there are rules in many places that mean that you must register in the country you study in, and therefore outside of Norway, says communications adviser Andreas Skjøld-Lorange at the NRK Ministry of Justice.

MIS UNDERSTANDING: The exception for students in the Nordic countries is not to discriminate between foreign students, says communications consultant Andreas Skjøld-Lorange.

He adds:

– It involves differential treatment between Norwegian students studying in the Nordic countries and Norwegian students in other countries. That was not the intention, and that is why we have clarified the rules.

It explains that Norwegians abroad who are not registered in Norway should no longer stay in quarantine hotels.

– We see that imported infection constitutes a large part of the development of infection in Norway. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen measures to prevent infections from imports, says Skjøld-Lorange.

In Denmark, the infection rate is now 1,018 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the NRK summary.

All Norwegians living in Denmark must be quarantined for 10 days. Danish citizens must also present a negative covid-19 test if they wish to visit Norway, Skjøld-Lorange states.
