A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison, as well as to pay 150,000 crowns in compensation to the woman for rape. The verdict included a reduction of the sentence because the police had left the case in the drawer for 13 months, without doing anything about it.
His lawyer, Gunhild Bergan, tells Nettavisen that he denies his criminal guilt and will appeal the verdict.
The 28-year-old said in court that the activity in the bedroom had been voluntary. Attorney Bergan pointed out that no one had seen the incident itself and that therefore it cannot be ruled out that the woman is speaking incorrectly about what happened.
However, the majority of the judges of the Oslo District Court believe that it is overwhelmingly likely that the violation occurred.

Although the woman did not report the matter until about a month later, she did tell a friend about the incident earlier that day. In a Snapchat message, the woman said she had been raped. “It seems that she did not know if it is normal to report this in Norway and did not know how to tell others at the party,” the verdict reads.
The court also highlighted the explanation of another woman, who had been present at the party. She said the defendant, who is originally from Nigeria but lives in Sweden, had previously touched her while she was sleeping in the same apartment.
