If it has been more than two weeks since you took the AstraZeneca vaccine, you are probably at risk for the rare course of the disease, says FHI.

Published:

– We believe that it is out of danger after 14 days, and that then it is unlikely that something will happen, says the director of infection control, Geir Bukholm, to VG.

– But it is based on the information we have on five patients, so there is quite limited patient material, he adds.

Experts continue to investigate why five healthcare workers under the age of 50 were hospitalized with severe blood clots, low platelets, and bleeding.

Patients became ill three to 12 days after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Around 130,000 Norwegians have been vaccinated with AstraZeneca so far. According to the six cases found, the incidence is more than one person in every 20,000.

This makes it a very rare side effect.

A direct connection between the vaccine and cases of the disease has yet to be proven, and that is what is now being investigated.

Professor Pål Andre Holme believes that it was most likely the vaccine that triggered a strong immune reaction that led to them getting sick. The EU Medicines Agency believes that a connection cannot yet be seen and is adamant that the vaccine is safe.

According to reports received by the director of infection control, no other country has reported such incidents that have occurred more than two weeks after vaccination.

– As far as I know, it is no later than 14 days. It’s good.

Other countries

Germany now reports 12 cases with a similar disease picture, which they are said to have discovered after hearing about the Norwegian cases. The UK has so far discovered five of the same serious side effects that Norway is suspected of having.

Denmark was the country that for the first time stopped vaccination with AstraZeneca after a death.

On Saturday, Danske Ekstra Bladet stated that two people had been admitted to the Capital Region after receiving the vaccine. One of them died.

Due to the immune response

It was Pål professor and chief physician André Holme in Rikshospitalet who on Thursday told VG that they had found the cause of the condition and that it is due to a strong immune reaction that is likely triggered by the vaccine.

Rikshospitalet has a total of five patients, and it is only these that Holme and her group observe. One of them died.

The sixth patient is a Tynset health worker, who died of a brain hemorrhage.

EMA Committee: Recommends a warning about possible side effects of AstraZeneca

Norway has stopped vaccination while investigating whether there are similarities between the patients.

On Thursday, the European Medicines Agency recommended that a warning be given about the possible side effects of AstraZeneca, but not as possible side effects in the instructions for use. Norway disagreed and ended up dissenting, which means that it was against the conclusion.
