– We realized that something was terribly wrong

The unpredictable tidal wave washed out the valley floor after a glacier failed and caused flooding in the Himalayan mountains in northern India on Sunday morning Norwegian time.

Between 100 and 150 people are believed to have lost their lives in the incident. Only a dozen of them have been found.

Rescuers are looking for a tough life, but they know they are fighting a battle against the clock. In the masses left by the tsunami, after washing the valley floor in Uttarakhand, people are still buried.

Trapped in tunnels

Images from the site show how mud and dirty water turned the valley into a nightmare. Large search teams and the army participate in the search for the dead and survivors. Rescue teams have also evacuated several villages. The army has deployed more than 2,000 soldiers in search of the survivors and the dead, writes the AP news agency.

Most of the missing are workers at the Tapovan hydroelectric plant. The plant is one of two that suffered severe damage when bodies of water broke into them. In two of the tunnels in the area, where work was taking place, more than 40 workers are said to have worked. 12 were rescued, but more than 30 remain.

– The rescue teams used ropes and shovels to reach the tunnel exit. They are still trying to get in touch with those left there, Uttarakhand elected politician Trivendra Singh Rawat tells AP.

By Sunday afternoon Norwegian time, the water level had stabilized and the threat of further flooding decreased. Again, the cleanup job and the hope of finding more survivors.
