– The infection figures are heading in the wrong direction, said the government’s chief medical adviser, Chris Whitty, at a televised news conference Monday.

The infection is increasing in all age groups and throughout the country. At the same time, the number of hospital admissions and the number of deaths from covid-19 are increasing.

Close parts of Wales

Wales today decided to close several areas as of Tuesday afternoon due to the spread. People who live in places where the infection is high cannot move unless they can show that they are going to school or work.

The British government is now taking a closer look at what measures they will consider introducing to prevent a further rise in covid-19 infection. Whitty cautioned that the British should expect stricter measures as autumn and colder times approach.

– We must tackle this collectively. Colder weather “helps” the virus and it takes time for science to come to our rescue. We should consider this as an issue we must work on together in the next six months, Whitty said.

Several European countries are now studying what measures they can introduce without having to shut down and create too serious problems for the economy.

He fears high death rates

– If we do too little, we lose control of the virus, if we do too much, it affects the economy and working life. People will lose jobs and it will also lead to poverty and disease, the British adviser said.

The government’s national health advisor Sir Patrick Vallance has warned that as early as October, up to 50,000 new infections could be reached each day if current developments continue.

– Now we see that the epidemic doubles every seven days. That means we could have 200 new corona deaths every day in mid-October, he said.

Vallance said it appears that the coronavirus is something you have to learn to live with. But he also noted that they are working hard to get a vaccine and said more are now going through the latest tests.

Must have “valid reason” in Madrid

In Spain, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will meet with the leader of the Community of Madrid to discuss stricter measures.

Police in the Spanish capital have prevented people from entering and leaving working-class areas where the outbreaks have been significant, reports the AP news agency. The move has been met with strong protests from people who believe it was about stigmatizing poor citizens. Some 800,000 residents have been asked to provide valid reasons why they should be allowed to move. Entry or exit was approved if you could show that you were going to work, study, or a doctor’s appointment, for example.

According to figures from the Spanish health authorities, Spain has had more than 1,000 cases of contagion per 100,000 inhabitants in the last two weeks.
