Ten people are not yet counted. They have been missing since 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

– Do you think the ten that have not been counted are in the landslide zone?

– We take it into account. We hypothesize they are in the landslide area, says task leader Roger Pettersen during a press conference.

The background to the hypothesis is the extensive investigation conducted by the police.

– We believe this based on the work we do with mapping the location of housing units, who is the population register in the addresses and that we have spoken with many people. We do a lot of mapping work. That is why we believe there are missing people in the area, he says.

The police claim that it is men, women and children who are missing. The police will not provide further information on these.

Extensive rescue operation

Throughout Wednesday, there has been a huge rescue operation at Ask in Gjerdrum municipality, following a rapid clay landslide.

Throughout the night, the police have searched with drones and helicopters. At 6 o’clock in the morning on Thursday, work began to send crews by helicopter to the landslide zone.

– It is not yet possible to enter the area with ground personnel. We have tried to lower a defense rescuer and a police dog handler down to some buildings in the landslide area. Unfortunately, this has not resulted in any finds, says operations manager Dag André Sylju to TV 2 on the spot.

A battle against the clock

Despite the fact that the people have been missing for more than a day, the police emphasize that it is still a rescue operation.

– We are still in a rescue operation, so our hope is to find people alive, says the leader of the task.

At the same time, he emphasizes that it becomes more difficult the longer it takes.

– Time has been important throughout the rescue operation. The more time passes, the worse the odds, says Sylju.

– How long will this rescue operation last?

– I can’t answer that, but there will be ongoing evaluations, he says.

Demanding working conditions

Emergency services claim that all available crews have been deployed in the search, which will continue beyond Thursday. There are still very demanding working conditions.

– There have been challenges in relation to light. Weather conditions have also been stable since the landslide. It makes work demanding, but we do what we can depending on the conditions, says the task leader.

Two buildings collapsed around 11 pm The ground inside the red zone is still very unsafe.

Good news

Although police have not found anyone overnight, a drone discovered a heat source in the area of the landslide at 1.30am.

– It turned out to be a dog, which was rescued around 2:45, and apparently in good condition. So at least it’s good news for the evening, says Sylju.

It was the dog Zaika who was found and rescued.

Listening and observation posts have been set up throughout the night.

More than a thousand evacuees

The mayor of Gjerdrum says that the entire local community is very affected by the situation.

– It is a very serious situation, characterized by great uncertainty and a lot of work to do. It is a great shame among some and many who are desperate, says Anders Østensen (Labor) on Thursday morning.

More than a thousand people have been evacuated after the rapid clay landslide. The municipality has had meetings both with the people who have been evacuated and with all those who are relatives of the disappeared.

– It was a very strong meeting, says Østensen.

The municipality is working hard to serve all affected people.

– This is a demanding situation that can seem chaotic. We work to get systematic at work and solve the tasks that need to be done in the best possible way, he says.

Major material damage

A total of nine buildings collapsed with a total of 31 residential units.

– There are reasons to believe that there is significant material damage. The construction masses are scattered everywhere and much has sunk into the masses, says Sylju.

NVE geologists will continue to conduct test drilling in the area as part of a survey that will provide answers on which areas are still exposed to landslides.

Police say there is still a danger that the avalanche will take over more houses.
