Difficult times: – New restrictions arrived today. They are hard on everyone. For us and many in our industry, it doesn’t just mean we have to be home. We cannot have a home office. We have to close the doors, writes Jimmy Øien. Photo: Eirik Nilsen

Oslo and Norway will reopen. We must breathe, live, enjoy. Eat, laugh and experiment. The pandemic is not eternal. But if we want to live, we must survive.

This is a chronicle. The chronicle expresses the attitude of the writer. You can submit articles and discussion posts to VG here.

Dear friends, colleagues and guests. You’ve lined up with masks, alcohol, and distance. Together we have kept it going, hard work and magical experiences rolled into one. It has been inspiring.

Now it’s over. The virus has continued to spread. It must stop and everyone must contribute. We also.

Today new restrictions arrived. They are hard on everyone. For us and many in our industry, it doesn’t just mean we have to be home. We cannot have a home office. We have to close the doors.

Today we do not cover the tables.

What remains to be seen is who can set the table again.

Dear Councilor and Government. Now you have to listen. Furthermore, now you have to act.

During the first shutdown, there were deals that were too bad for companies. Most people needed a parachute, but it had a feather.

With insane effort and will, some have still succeeded – until now. The fact that several trained people have already gone bankrupt should be a warning light. For a second round, with his legs already broken, he is not going to leave.

Crisis solutions and packages are costly. A collapse of bankruptcies, hundreds of unemployed youth, a dilapidated urban landscape, and severe psychological and physical consequences of unemployment are far more costly.

The cost is both financial and human. As a chef and leader of a fantastic group, I especially know the latter. Politicians should too.

A single unemployed person costs the state about 700,000 a year. If just a restaurant with 15 employees has to close its doors forever, the employees are unlikely to find other jobs. Calculating the bankruptcy package should be straightforward.

Oslo and Norway will reopen. We must breathe, live, enjoy. Eat, laugh and experiment. The pandemic is not eternal. But if we want to live, we must survive.

He can not wait. The table is empty.
