(Liverpool-Brighton 0-1) Liverpool suffered their second consecutive defeat at Anfield. The distance to Manchester City at the top of the table is increasing.

There are seven points ahead and, in addition, Manchester City has a match left over for Jürgen Klopp’s team, who clearly showed their discontent from the bench.

– We are not in the title match at the moment, says Liverpool defender Andy Robertson according to the BBC.

The consolation is that Manchester City will visit this weekend, and Liverpool will have a chance to correct some if they win that match.

– We have to return to the Liverpool that everyone knows, continues Robertson.

Liverpool lost at Anfield when Burnley visited just under two weeks ago. It was the first loss in 68 home games since April 2017.

Since then, there have been two away victories in London, against Tottenham and West Ham. But back at Anfield, there was another recession. Liverpool now have one point in their last three home games.

The last time Liverpool lost two straight games to Anfield was in September 2012 (against Arsenal and Manchester United).

Solskjær’s biggest win as United manager: 9-0

Liverpool’s problem comes at the same time that Manchester United won 9-0 on Tuesday and Manchester City took a very controlled victory on Wednesday.

With 0-0 at halftime, Liverpool had played two games (Manchester United and Burnley) and a half without scoring at home at Anfield. Brighton actually seemed quite comfortable on defense.

So a small record lurked: Liverpool had not played three home games without scoring since October 1984, when Joe Fagan was manager.

It would turn out that that record was broken.

– We don’t show up. But we are still a good layer. We won’t be a bad team overnight, says Andy Robertson.

– We have to find a way to get results, especially at home, continues the Liverpool defender, and believes that the best team won.

Jürgen Klopp says in an interview shown on TV 2 that they met a very good Brighton.

– It seemed we were mentally tired. It has been a difficult week for us with two away games. We put the ball down too easily. We don’t believe enough either, says the German.

In another interview, with the BBC, Klopp says:

– Brighton deserved to win. For me, it is more important to find an explanation for why we lost this match and to understand what happened tonight.

– Brighton had pretty good control throughout the game, says Jesper Mathisen in the TV 2 studio.

Brighton took the lead just over ten minutes into the second half with a fine attack that ended with British-Colombian Steven Alzate driving the ball into the net behind goalkeeper replacement Caoimhin Kelleher. Or was it Leandro Trossard? Erik Thorstvedt in the TV 2 studio clearly thought it was Trossard. Regardless: the score came after a beautiful header from Dan Burn.

– I’m not sure who scored, admits Alzate himself in an interview shown on TV 2.

– But I’m taking it! That is my first goal in the Premier League.

After 73 minutes, Brighton was very close to 2-0. Pascal Gross fired and Jordan Henderson carried the ball just before Ben White put the ball into the net.

Soon after, Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was on a terrible streak, but luckily for the guests it ended well.

The city won easily and is alone at the top of the table.

It was a fierce run towards Brighton’s goal, and Sanchez didn’t seem to kick at all. However, Liverpool failed to create the chances that could turn the game around. Brighton has kept a clean sheet in four straight league games.

– A fantastic performance. The players were fantastic, Brighton coach Graham Potter told the BBC.

Liverpool tend to give away points against many of the latter teams this season.

A reigning league champion has not played three home games without scoring since Manchester United played their last three home games in the 2001/2002 season.

Alisson Becker is ill and was replaced by Irishman Caoimhin Kelleher as goalkeeper.

Liverpool had previously won six of seven Premier League games since being promoted to Brighton in 2017. But in November 2020, it was 1-1.

And now a 0-1 loss to Graham Potter’s team.
