Infection in Sweden is on the rise considerably and state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell says the next few weeks will be difficult.

– The infection is very fast in many European countries, unfortunately. It is also beginning to be seen that there is an increase in the number of deaths. Unfortunately, it will be a difficult autumn, says Swedish state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.

This is what he says during a press conference that the Swedish authorities hold this Tuesday, where they report on the situation of the crown in the country.

Tegnell said that Sweden now has a total of 115,785 confirmed cases of infection, which gives an image of infection of 146 infected per 100,000 inhabitants. There are especially many infected in the age group 20-29 years, but also many cases in the other age groups up to 60 years.

Sweden has recorded a total of 5,918 crown-related deaths.

– We are beginning to approach a critical point. It hasn’t affected deaths so far, but we’re starting to approach a tipping point, Tegnell says.

Spare hard hit

The Skåne Region has called an extraordinary press conference at 3.30pm on Tuesday, after the region experienced a tripling in the number of patients admitted with crown in the last week. Since Monday, the number of patients in the region has gone from five to nine.

– There has been a sharp increase in the spread of the infection in the last week, it has doubled, he says, and says a total of 8652 cases have already been registered in the region.

Therefore, the following local measures are introduced in the Swedish region:

  • Avoid public transportation
  • Avoid stores, malls, and other crowded places.
  • Greater use of the home office
  • If possible, avoid physical contact with people other than those you live
  • The number of people who can participate in public events is reduced from 300 to 50 participants.

Local measures last until November 30 in the first instance.

Eva Melander, chief doctor for infection control in the Skåne region, says the situation was calm just over a week ago.

– Today we have 57 hospitalized patients, seven of them in the intensive care unit. This is a very disturbing development. We tested a lot, but at the same time infection tracking is heavily loaded now due to all cases. In general, we have a completely different situation than we had a couple of weeks ago. It’s serious, she says.

Melander says that everyone must now shoulder their responsibility to overcome the spread of the infection, to make the situation even worse.

The number of intensive care patients is increasing

The burden due to COVID-19 has increased in hospitals in the last week, says Iréne Nilsson Carlsson, a public health adviser for the National Board of Health and Welfare.

It states that the number of patients in intensive care units has increased from 34 patients on October 24 to 55 patients on Tuesday. There is also an increase in patients with covid-19 in other wards, where 322 patients were admitted yesterday.

– Access to intensive care units remains good. It’s stressful, but we’re still in control.

When asked by journalists in the room about the development of the infection, it is fast, considering that the number of intensive care patients is increasing and the infection, for example, in the Skåne Region has doubled, Tegnell responds:

– No, not really. We started at very low levels. We have relatively few patients in intensive care units compared to this spring.
