Wayne Rooney played in the hearts of United supporters between 2004 and 2017. However, he reveals that things were not always so rosy at the old club.
As is well known, the United legend ended up staying at the club with which he won five Premier League titles and one Champions League title.
But on the official Manchester United UTD Podcast, Wayne Rooney reflects on his desire to leave the club in 2010.

Frustert rooney
His frustration increased especially when United sold out star players Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez in 2009, which in turn affected his relationship with coach legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
– The relationship with Sir Alex was a bit affected because I tried to think about the big picture. As you told me, I obviously had nothing to do with that case.
However, it was not just Ferguson who was unhappy with his former star forward. Regarding his relationship with fans now, Rooney says the following:
– I think it’s okay. But it was also negatively affected in 2010 when I asked to leave the club, which I understand. I understand the fans’ frustration over that. But again I think there were several things going on and that he was frustrated with the way the club was going.

– We sold Tevez and Ronaldo, and when United offered me a five-year contract, it was going to be my last big contract, at a time when I was at the peak of my career.
Desired reinforcements
With big stars off the team, it was clear to Rooney that they needed fresh blood to continue their success.
– I really wanted to have guarantees on who we were going to pick up when we sold these players. If we were to build for the next three years, we would basically have to bring in established players.
– That’s what I thought, but the manager acknowledged that he told me he had nothing to do with it. I said, ‘Okay, I respect your decision. You are the manager, but if you cannot give these guarantees, the best thing is that I leave the club, ”says Rooney.
– It happened quickly and it’s something I regret now. I went to speak to David Gill after that and he was obviously a bit calmer than Sir Alex at the time. I think it was two or three days before I actually signed the deal and it all happened pretty quickly. Decisions were made based on emotions rather than sitting down and thinking about them.
– Have a lot of respect for him.
Rooney, who is now in Derby, believes his little fights in the locker room also helped the coach, as they showed an example to the other players on the team.
– I think I always had a good relationship with the coach, but after that sometimes in the break talk, the coach and I hit each other a bit, says Rooney.
– I think the manager loved it. I knew that by doing it with me, I was sending a message to the other players. He did the same with Giggsy. So Giggsy, the manager, and I were a bit together, which continued for a bit longer. After a game, the manager could walk to the bus and then relax in the back of my mind! It was his way of saying “it’s over.”
However, despite his disagreements with Ferguson, Rooney expresses that he is satisfied with the way they managed to move forward, including the series’ victory in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons, respectively.
– To this day, I have great respect for him. It was only the little moments in the closet that were missing a bit. It was something that is still there, it took away a bit of that character and also him. This is how it is. I think the most important thing was that we worked it out pretty quickly, we went ahead and won the league again next year, says Rooney.
