Warn: – It will be very slippery

– It will be very slippery, warns Terje Alsvik Walløe, meteorologist on duty at the Meteorological Institute.

The Institute has issued a yellow warning for Buskerud, Oslo, Akershus, Oppland and Hedmark for Monday morning. The reason is the insidious natural phenomenon of supercooled rain, where raindrops freeze when they hit the ground.

First of the year

Walløe explains Sunday night:

– It’s less degrees in the area. Tonight and tomorrow a softer air enters. Because there is little wind on the ground, it first warms up in height and the precipitation falls as rain. Because the temperature on the ground is still below freezing, we get supercooled rain.

According to the meteorologist, this is the first warning of the year for freezing rain in southern Norway. The phenomenon creates major problems for vehicle drivers at all times and will usually lead to minor and major traffic accidents when the ground suddenly turns ice.

But the extent depends on the actual temperature and location.

– North of Oslo increases the chance of freezing rain, and the extent depends on how fast the temperature rises, where the temperature is above zero. It seems that the division is approximately in Drøbak, explains the state meteorologist.

Gray and wet

The chance of freezing rain will be higher on smaller roads that are not salty.

– It can also happen here even if the temperature is above zero degrees, because the ground is still cold, Walløe warns, noting that on Sunday night it is minus 5 degrees in Gardermoen.

However, the freezing rain melts relatively quickly. And on Tuesday, the weather improves in eastern and southern Norway, then turns gray and wet.

– There will be a lot of sun and north wind. The next rainfall in the area will be Wednesday night / night through Thursday; then there will be a lot of wind and the precipitation will fall as rain, Walløe reports.

The temperature will be above most in the lowlands, while the lower temperatures in the altitude mean that the precipitation falls as snow.

– It will be skiable in the mountains, says the meteorologist.

Warmer in the west

The climate in western Norway moves parallel to the climate on the other side of the basin, but with a slightly higher temperature and therefore no supercooled rain.

– There will also be periods of precipitation, but it will be quite pleasant from Tuesday, and a little warmer. In the inland regions of western Norway, however, there will be some snow, Walløe emphasizes.

The northern part of the country often has the “opposite” climate trend to southern Norway. And the current period is no exception.

– There is precipitation now. As of Thursday, however, they receive easterly winds, and it will be fine from central Norway and the north on Thursday / Friday, says the meteorologist.

Bad registry

Walløe says November has been unusually mild in eastern Norway.

– It was close to a record, but it’s spoiled by the last cold days, which pull the cut down. But we still have to go back to the fall of 2000 to find a warmer November in Oslo, he says.

But there are big differences in temperature between regions.

– In Røros today it is minus 19 degrees, while on the coast of Nordland and Troms it is measured plus 8, says Terje Alsvik Walløe.
