Some 300 people have gathered at Rosengård in Malmö to protest the fact that a Quran was burned today. Police say the situation is out of control.

– We have ongoing violent riots that we handle. We do not have the situation under control and it is disturbing throughout the area, says Rickard Lundqvist, SVT police press officer.

The riots began around 7 p.m. on Friday night. Police first reported that they had the situation under control, but it has escalated overnight, according to Aftonbladet. Fireworks have been lit and objects have been thrown at the police. In addition, several cars have caught fire. One person has been arrested.

According to the police, the reason for the unrest is that the Koran was burned that same day in the Emilstorp industrial zone by representatives of the Danish far-right Stram Kurs party.

There must also have been another critical demonstration of Islam at Stortorget in Malmö, where three people were arrested for incitement after kicking a Quran.

These demonstrations are a reaction to the fact that the leader of the Stram Kurs party, Rasmus Paludan, refused to hold a celebration in Malmö on “Islamization in the Nordic countries”. There it was planned to burn a bacon-wrapped Quran, something Paludan has previously done in Denmark.

Paludan was invited by Swedish artist Dan Park, who had previously been convicted of agitation. On Friday, Danish party leader Paludan was denied entry into Sweden and imposed a two-year entry ban, DR writes.
