VALLE (Dagbladet): Vidar Örn Kjartansson (30) showed up in earnest on his return to the Eliteserien. In the game against Brann, he did not seem to have lost his hunger for the goal, and also scored three goals in nine minutes.
That made the Vålerenga coach Dag-Eilev Fagermo smile from the crowd and the Icelander himself. And the smile doesn’t go away when Dagbladet meets Kjartansson at Intility a couple of days after his goal show.
– It was perfect. If I write one down, I would be very happy. But I really have no words, Kjartansson tells Dagbladet.
– Were you surprised?
– Yes absolutely. I didn’t play soccer for 40-50 days so I didn’t know what to expect. I was definitely surprised, says the Icelander.
There were great expectations for Kjartansson’s return to Vålerenga. He played for the club in 2014 and scored 25 goals in 29 games.
But since he left before New Year 2014, there have been more than just ups and downs. The Icelander went to the Chinese Jiangsu Sainty for the first time, before returning to Scandinavia and announcing a move to Malmö. After that, the trip went to Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel.
In these three clubs he delivered good numbers, although not as extreme as in VIF. But the explosion was yet to come in Russia. Because in 2018, after a good stay in Israel, he was ready for Russian FC Rostov.
Add an incredible amount of death
– madness
He was booked for a sum of around 25 million crowns. This transition remains the most expensive Rostov signing of all time.
When he got to the club, they quickly told him that it didn’t fit their style.
– In Rostov they signed me as their most expensive player in history. After two or three weeks, the coach said that I probably didn’t fit into the system. That’s crazy, really. He was ready to switch, but said he wanted to use a different system, says Kjartansson.
– I have nothing bad to say about the coach. He’s a good guy and he was a good player. But the way I wanted to play football and the way I play I was a bad game, he continues.
His coach is the Russian icon Valeri Karpin. He has 72 caps for Russia and has led Rostov since 2017.
Threatened by jealous fins
Fateful exercise
There were only eight league games for the Icelander and there were no goals for Rostov, who today has Norwegian Mathias Normann on the block.
In particular, he recounts an episode that astonished him.
– One day I was a little tired and I had breakfast. I think he had slept badly and was very “shaky” in training. He couldn’t see well and was dehydrated. And they just said, ‘What’s up? You can’t play a game like this. “It just wasn’t my day, and jet lag was probably the reason. But the club thought about this even two months later, says the Icelander.
Finally, the journey continued to Rubin Kazan, another Russian club. Here, too, it was difficult to be adequately comfortable with the 30-year-old.
– I played a lot there, but the ones I played with played very difficult football, do you understand what I mean? It wasn’t easy and the ball was never in the box, says Kjartansson, who thinks his football was a bit tricky.
– After the season, I found out that we played 30 games and scored only 15 goals. So it was very difficult. In my half season at the club I think we scored five goals. Scoring there was difficult. It’s a nice club and they would play football that I like, but we lacked experience in a league that is very tough physically.
Kjartansson is 30 years old and perhaps in his prime soccer age. Now you may have gotten serious about scoring. The next test for the Icelander is against Molde.
