The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, estimates that the best scenarios mean that 50 million doses of vaccines can be administered per month.
Delivery of a corona vaccine may start “in earnest” in the EU in April 2021, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference on Wednesday.
– It’s perhaps the best estimate we have at the moment, says FHI’s Camilla Stoltenberg.
About when did the first doses arrive in Norway, Health Minister Bent Høie tells VG.
– It’s in that period. The fastest we imagine is January, but it is conceivable that April is more realistic, says the Minister of Health.
We know this about what will happen in the future:
- A vaccine must first be approved: It is still impossible to say exactly when a vaccine can be approved in the EU and Norway. The Norwegian Medicines Agency hopes that a vaccine can receive conditional approval in the EU and Norway in January.
- What do you need? The European Medicines Agency (EMA) accepts applications for vaccines on behalf of all EU / EEA countries. They have already started the approval process for two corona vaccines: To Oxford University / Astrazeneca Y BioNTech / Pfizer. However, a vaccine cannot be approved until it has completed the final and decisive testing phase. Ten different corona vaccines are in this final testing phase now.
- Temporarily approved: When a vaccine is approved in the EU and Norway, it will probably only receive a conditional and temporary approval first. This means that the company must deliver more results of its research over time, also after approval.
- You should receive doses: The vaccine doses must then be delivered to EU countries and Norway, before vaccination can begin. This is where the EU summit talks about things “getting serious” in April. Von der Leyen estimates that the best scenarios mean that 50 million doses of vaccines can be administered per month.
- To the municipalities: When Norway can receive vaccine doses here, they estimate that it may take two to three weeks before the first group of priority people are vaccinated. It is not yet clear who will be given priority for the first doses. It depends on how the vaccine actually works. But FHI will receive the doses of the vaccine in its warehouse and then distribute them to the municipalities.
