The Washington Post, The New York Times and the Associated Press report that Chief of Staff Mark Meadows called FDA chief Stephen Hahn and threatened to fire him if the vaccine was not approved by Saturday.
– Get the damn vaccines out NOW, President Donald Trump himself tweeted on Friday afternoon local time.
Earlier this week, both the UK and Canada approved the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine. Bahrain has also approved it.
The British began vaccination on Tuesday, while Canada awaits the first 249,000 doses of vaccine during December.
In all, Canada has ordered 20 million doses, which is enough to vaccinate 10 million people.
Hahn gave in to pressure
Hahn’s plan was to approve the vaccine on Saturday, after a panel of experts recommended approval on Thursday.
There are many practical and logistical challenges that follow approval.
Multiple documents must be completed. The list of possible side effects that is shipped with each dose should be as complete as possible, doctors should be informed, and a distribution plan should be developed.
According to The New York Times, the plan is to distribute 2.9 million doses in the first days after approval.
Avisa also writes that people who work with distribution believe that one day, or until now, they have little to say about how quickly the vaccine can reach users.
It is the health workers and the elderly in the institutions who will be given priority first.
Global race for vaccines
The United States ordered 100 million from Pfizer in July, with the option to buy another 500 million vaccines.
But the Health Minister explained earlier this week on PBS Newshour that Pfizer could not say when they could deliver the additional order.
On Friday night it became known that federal authorities ordered an additional 100 million vaccines from competitor Moderna. This is in addition to the 100 million previously reserved.
This vaccine is also not approved by the FDA, but the US authorities do not risk others obtaining it in advance.
- The UK has obtained 40 million doses of the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine. just vaccinate 20 million people. The first 800,000 arrived in the country this week.
- Canada has already purchased 20 million Pfizer / Biontech vaccines, with the option to purchase another 56 million.
Trump may have been annoyed that the British were the first to use a vaccine produced by an American company.
Russians are also in the process of vaccinating with their own vaccine. Today it was announced that the Swedish-British AstraZeneca will cooperate with the Russians in further development together.
