Nursing home residents are at the top of the corona vaccine priority list.
In Oslo, there are 4,100 residents in nursing homes and therefore everyone who says yes will be offered the vaccine as soon as vaccination starts.
According to health adviser Robert Steen in Oslo, the plan is for all nursing home residents to be vaccinated with the first dose in mid-January.
– From the first bite, three weeks should pass until the second dose is established. After the second dose, it takes about a week before the vaccine takes full effect. And therefore, most people will be able to have the full effect of the vaccine by the end of January, Steen tells Dagbladet.
– Then we are there, and we have protection for those who need it most.
May consider relief
Steen believes that as early as late January, when most residents have an effect from the vaccine, they can begin to consider measures to facilitate action.
– This is something we need to have a professional evaluation of, but if we are certain that residents will not be infected, we are in a different situation in terms of infection control.
Fear of vaccine congestion
Nursing homes have had very strict visiting restrictions after the pandemic broke out, and most residents have had to stay within the four walls of the nursing home for a long time.
– What about the general measures in Oslo then?
– There is another discussion. The measures will be governed by the general infection situation in Oslo, he responds.
– Salt
Steen says that March 14 was a heavy day for Oslo in the pandemic, when the first corona death took place in a nursing home in Ellingsrudhjemmet.
– We know very well that nursing homes have been a risk area if infection arrives, so it is important to protect this group with vaccines. It will eliminate a big worry, he says.
Vaccination in Oslo will likely start on December 27.
– This year, it is not December 21 that it is sunny. For me, it will be another day, hopefully in December, he says and aims to start the vaccination.
Kaver to get away from responsibility
Other 40,000
News came in on Friday that Norway will receive another 40,000 doses of vaccines this Christmas.
– I am glad that we already receive even more doses of vaccines in the Christmas space. In principle, these doses should be enough to give a first dose to all residents of nursing homes in Norway, says Prime Minister Erna Solberg.
For practical reasons, the first 10,000 doses are used in the Oslo area, but the remaining doses will be distributed according to the NIPH recommendation and distributed throughout the country.
After the New Year, the plan is for Norway to receive around 40,000 doses a week, the same as the EU countries.
