US politicians demand a strong response to cyberattacks

US experts and authorities believe that Russia is behind the massive hacker attack.

On Saturday, however, Trump pointed the finger at China in a Twitter message. It has drawn criticism from both Democratic and Republican representatives in Congress.

“Russia can operate with impunity,” Republican Sen. Mitt Romney told CNN.

Romney, who is known as a sharp critic of the president, says he is very disappointed in Trump’s comment on Twitter on Saturday.

– The president has blinders when it comes to Russia, he says.

“The president does not strengthen the security of the United States with such comments,” Democrat Mark Warner, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told ABC television.

The attack by hackers, which has been called the Sunburst, is said to be the worst that the United States government has suffered. Hackers have used malicious software, so-called malware, which, among other things, is said to have been installed at the US Department of the Treasury.

It gave hackers access to the internal email exchange, probably for months. Other ministries and agencies and a large number of private companies and organizations also appear to be affected. Security experts are working to map the extension.

Biden will take action

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also believes that Russia is behind the attack.

Incoming President Joe Biden, for his part, vows to take action.

– Those responsible must bear the consequences, Biden’s future chief of staff Ron Klain told CBS television. It also says that Biden will take steps as president to reduce the possibility of carrying out such hacks.

– Failure to respond to such an attack would be lousy policy and, frankly, it would simply be an invitation to Russia and others to continue such malicious activities.
