There is no doubt that autumn has arrived in Norway, but the autumn weather has not been as good as it used to be.
In recent days there have been great contrasts between the weather in the north and south.
– It has changed in eastern Norway this weekend, while in western Norway and the north it has been very hot, says Isak Slettebø, meteorologist on duty in Storm.
This is not how the weather usually is in early October.
– The normal thing in October is that it rains a lot in the west of Norway, stays in the east of Norway and cold in the north of Norway, but so far it has not been like that. Everything is upside down, says Slettebø.
Rain log
There has been an abnormal amount of rain in southern Norway in recent days. On Sunday, between 50 and 70 mm of rain was measured in 24 hours in several places.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute writes that up to five measuring stations set a new daily precipitation record in October. This despite the fact that the month has just begun.
– This is a lot of rain even in western Norway. But what is surprising is that it has happened in eastern Norway, says Slettebø.
Rain in eastern Norway does not appear to subside immediately and will continue throughout the week.
Yesterday was a rainy sunday # East Norway☔ It can be felt both among outdoor commuters and in record statistics: up to five stations set a new 24-hour record for October, even though the month has only just begun … 😮 pic.twitter.com/x2GaNC0UVu

– It will not rain as hard as this weekend, but we are not done with the precipitation yet. It seems like it has occasionally rained on both Tuesday and Wednesday, says Slettebø.
Sun and heat
In northern Norway and western Norway, the situation has been completely different.
– It has been quite nice and mild in the north this weekend. This will continue beyond this week as well, says Slettebø.
The average temperature in Tromsø in October is usually six degrees. But in recent days, the average temperature has hovered around 12 degrees.
– It’s much hotter than it usually is in early October, says Slettebø.
It will be unusually hot here, and here it will be down
The cold is waiting
Western Norway tends to be characterized by a lot of rain in the fall months, but so far it has escaped cheaply.
– It’s been very nice weather in western Norway and there doesn’t seem to be much rain until the weekend, says Slettebø.
Although it is already October, it is still quite hot in much of the country. In Bergen, it has been particularly hot, averaging 17.5 degrees so far in October.
– It hasn’t been directly cold anywhere in the country yet and it won’t be much colder this week either, says Slettebø.
