The 87-year-old man died of complications as a result of pancreatic cancer, the court says.
The death opens the door for President Donald Trump to appoint a new Supreme Court Justice to replace Ginsburg, who was considered one of the court’s four liberal justices. She was appointed by Bill Clinton in 1993.
The battle for compensation is already underway
In a statement from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate would vote on a Trump-nominated judge:
It is not clear when this could happen, but this process usually takes several months.
If Trump is allowed to replace Ginsburg, the conservative majority in court will likely be further strengthened.
Today’s Supreme Court consists of five judges who consider themselves conservative and four who consider themselves liberal.
Joe Biden said Friday night that he hopes the Republican-led Senate will wait to vote on a new Supreme Court justice until a new Senate meets. He believes that the winner of the election should nominate the successor, as Republicans were allowed to do in 2016 after the death of Antonin Scalia.
Last wish: wait to appoint a new judge
During his presidency, Trump has already appointed two conservative Supreme Court justices: Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
By appointing justices to the Supreme Court, Trump can help influence the way the United States is governed for many decades, while justices sit for life.
Just days before his passing, Ginsburg issued a statement to his granddaughter Clara Spera, urging Trump not to appoint a new judge before the election.
“My most ardent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is sworn in,” the statement said, according to NPR.
He was an icon for many
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a living icon for many Americans and in the nation’s capital, people are now flocking to the Supreme Court building to lay flowers.
She is remembered as one who fought for equality and democracy and paved the way for many American women.
She had nominal rock star status among liberal members of the millennial generation and was known as “The Notorious RBG.”
Films, documentaries, dolls, jewelry have been made about it.
