A man in his 60s is charged with negligent manslaughter following a traffic accident in Slemdal in Oslo on January 14 this year. A two-year-old boy lost his life in the accident after being run over in a crosswalk.

Both the driver and the boy, who was driving home from kindergarten and in the process of crossing the street with his mother, had a green light in connection with the accident.

“Due to inattention and / or improper distribution of attention, he did not discover that NN and his mother were crossing Stasjonsveien at a crosswalk with a green pedestrian signal. He did not fulfill the duty to yield to them and drove about both of them ”, is stated in the accusation against the driver.

– We are very sorry

The two-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries and died on the spot. The accused driver is still very affected by the incident.

– My client is very sorry about what happened, but does not admit criminal guilt after the indictment, says the defense lawyer for the defendant, Vegard Aaløkken, to Dagbladet.

Investigated lighting conditions

Police lawyer Eric Lindset says that several investigative steps have been taken in the wake of the incident. Among other things, attempts were made to obtain video footage of the accident, without success.

– The lighting conditions on the site have been one of the central themes of the investigation. The incident occurred in the transition between day and night. This, along with the lighting on the site, has been important to document, Lindset says.

The police lawyer describes the accusation as serious. Among other things, the police have received assistance from the accident group of the Norwegian Public Highway Administration at work. The trial is not currently scheduled.

Parent assistance attorney Brit Kjelleberg has no comment on the case at this time.

Can’t save

There was an extensive emergency response in connection with the accident last winter. Operations manager Sven Christian Lie summarized the incident as follows to Dagbladet at the time:

– When the police arrived at the scene, cardiopulmonary resuscitation had begun from the health. They did everything possible to save the child, but life could not be saved.

The now-accused driver was indicted at the scene and his driver’s license was confiscated.
