“In the court’s opinion, there are several major aggravating factors in the case. First, this applies to the brutal and serious manner in which the murder was committed,” the Jæren District Court ruling states.

The judges believe that there is a high degree of danger of new serious violent crimes, both in Sævik and in Gramstad-Olsen ”, and that convicted persons have a low threshold for the most serious violence.

The court also refers to expert assessments of the defendants’ personalities, where the prospects for treatment and change are assumed to be poor.

On this basis, the men were sentenced to prison and indefinite imprisonment:

“In the interest of society, it is necessary to monitor, control and supervise both, in addition to allowing a fixed-term sentence,” concludes the district court.

The satisfied prosecutor

Sigbjørn Sveli was found dead in Regestranden in Sola on December 9 last year.

The convicts met Sveli by chance at the Varhaug train station in Jæren. The men had gotten off at the wrong station and had a problem with Sveli in Vigrestad.

In the end, they seized Sveli’s car, which was locked all afternoon.

Sævik and Gramstad-Olsen admitted from the outset that they carried out the murder, but no one has pleaded guilty.

After the murder, the killers dumped Sveli’s car in the port of Ølberg, a couple of kilometers from the scene.

– We are pleased that the district court has followed the argument on the consideration of social protection. The most important thing here is that they are sentenced to prison and not necessarily to duration, says prosecutor Arvid Malde.

The sentence was almost identical to his allegation of 21 and 15 years in detention, respectively.

The court believes that the murder was carried out as planned and that Sveli suffered “excruciating pain” before dying from the flames.

Unprovoked murder

The judges further claim that the murder appears to be meaningless and was not caused by any random victim.

Both convicts were determined to be sane at the time of the murder.

Since Gramstad-Olsen is mildly mentally retarded, his custodial sentence will be shorter than Sævik’s.

“In the court’s opinion, in this context it cannot be ignored that Gramstad-Olsen’s developmental disability has contributed to her joining the actions. On the other hand, it is clear that the criminal acts in this case, and in particular the catastrophic consequences of the events, mean that the sanction must be in a reasonable proportion to the seriousness of the case ”, it is affirmed in the sentence.

Gramstad-Olsen defender Inam Ghous Ali says the verdict will be appealed.

– I have not had time to properly pass the verdict with my client, but he is informed about the verdict. We believe that the punitive response should have been mandatory care.

The convicts must also pay a reparation of 300,000 crowns to each of Sveli’s parents.

So far, NRK has been unable to obtain comment from all advocates or from the survivor assistance attorney.
