Interruptions, bullshit and gossip marked the first debate. Now action is being taken, but experts doubt it will work.
“I’ve never experienced anything like this,” Chris Wallace, who moderated the debate, told the New York Times the next day.
The Committee on Presidential Debates will now provide a more structured form of debate in the next two debates between the presidential candidates.
The commission promised in a statement Wednesday night that they will announce the new changes soon. At the same time, they thanked Wallace for the professionalism he demonstrated as president.

The independent political parties commission has organized all the debates since 1988. They believe that the first debate before this year’s elections made it clear that changes are needed.
– More structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more organized discussion of the issues, the commission writes in the statement.
In familiar flair, Trump quickly took to Twitter to comment on the commission’s decision:
“Try to get a new president and a smarter candidate from the Democrats,” wrote the president, who earlier that day accused Wallace of siding with Biden during the debate.
– Trump gives you the bark
NTNU political science professor Torbjørn Lindstrøm Knutsen sees no point in changing the rules.
– Trump gives deception in the rules, so I see little purpose in replacing one set of rules with another. Then it is better to give the president control of the microphone, says the professor.
He believes that the existing regulations have worked excellently for years.
– There should be a debate between two presumed adults, if a person behaves like a child, I think it’s okay. Then people will see what candidates they have to choose from, says Lindstrøm Knutsen.
– I think this is something that Trump and his Republican coaches need to resolve in the House. They must ask you to behave like people. I don’t think it should be the program director’s job.

– He’ll keep trying to put Biden out of action.
Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of Oslo, Deborah Kitchen-Døderlein, stood up until Wednesday night to follow the debate.
His first reaction was that one should have the opportunity to “put a mouthful” on the president, so that voters can listen undisturbed to the views of the opposing candidate. Throughout the day, he has changed his mind.
– I realized that an advantage of not doing it is that voters can see who Trump really is, says Kitchen-Døderlein.
She believes that possible changes to the format of the debate could be:
- More moderators
- A signal sound indicating that the talk time has expired.
- Chance to turn off the mic.
– The problem is that Trump will continue to attack Biden to try to knock him out. If the microphone is off, voters won’t necessarily pick up on those comments or understand Biden’s counterattack, says the associate professor.

Kitchen-Døderlein was impressed that Biden, with all the fuss, managed to stay focused. At the same time, he believes that tonight’s debate gave viewers so little that the commission might consider ruling out the next two.
– In that case, you have to explain to viewers that because Trump cannot abide by the rules, the upcoming debates must be canceled and that there is nothing more to learn when one of the debaters is so out of control, he says..
The associate professor believes the debate between Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris on October 7 will make the candidates’ policies much clearer to the public.
At the same time, he emphasizes that the majority of voters have already made a decision.
“Those who haven’t decided are probably people who have voted Republican their entire lives, struggling to imagine voting for Biden, but at the same time despising Trump’s personality,” says Kitchen-Døderlein.
