Trump blames forest owners for wildfires

When Donald Trump met with firefighters in California on Monday, he blamed forest owners for the unprecedented wildfires.

He said he had recently spoken to a European head of state, who does not have the same problem with forest fires.

– They don’t have those problems. They have very explosive trees, but they don’t have those problems, the president said.

He defended himself from attacks by democratic politicians. His opponent in the November 3 election, Joe Biden, said around the same time:

– If you give a climate arsonist four more years in the White House, how can anyone be surprised if more of the United States is on fire?

According to The New York Times, he said that Trump does not take into account science and facts.

When Trump traveled to California to meet with men and women fighting the flames, Governor Gavin Newson thanked the central government for its help. But he added:

– Climate change is a reality and fires are exacerbating in California.

Rake America Great Again

Trump repeated something he first said in 2018, after a meeting with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. The Finnish president recalls telling Trump:

– We take care of our forests and monitor them for the danger of forest fire.

Trump went further and said that Americans need to get better at the rake. Niinistö does not remember talking about precisely that.

But on both sides of the Atlantic, comedians got new raw material for their jokes.

Also in 2018, Trump said brush needs to be cleared to prevent wildfires. It triggered a lot of humor. Screenshot

Even middle-aged Norwegian pop musicians were caught up in the prank war, with the song “rake on me”.

It’s part of the story that Trump was right. Finnish forest owners care relatively little about forest fires. This is not due to raking, but to active thinning and cleaning after logging, said the head of the Finnish Forest Owners Association, Heikki Savolainen.

On Monday, Governor Newsom confirmed that California needs to improve its proper forest management.

For Democrats, however, the fires are a good opportunity to remind voters that Trump has done much to abolish or reduce the climate measures that Barack Obama introduced during his presidency.

On Monday, the president also met with Wade Crowfoot, who heads California’s natural resources directorate.

– It will start to cool down. Wait, Trump said.

“I wish science would agree with you,” Crowfoot replied.

On Monday, Trump did not say he doubted climate change. But rhetorically he asked if major polluters like China, India and Russia would change their policies.

– There are many countries that have to change their policy, because they represent a large part of the pollution, he said.
