The Municipality of Trondheim announces another new infection record in the next 24 hours. Young men especially are exposed, according to health director Helge Garåsen. At the same time, the police will prosecute communicators who do not cooperate.

Helge Garåsen, director of health and wellness for the municipality of Trondheim, warns of a record number of infections in the capital of Trøndelag over the next 24 hours.

He said so at the extraordinary meeting of the presidency in Trondheim on Tuesday morning.

– We expect a new infection record starting today, sadly, in part due to significant infection testing. We see that there are many outbreaks in different settings, but perhaps especially among young adult men, Garåsen said.

– We will defend this for a long time, now it does not help with a pattern, said Mayor Rita Ottervik (Labor) at the meeting on the increasingly demanding infection situation in Trondheim.

11 cases in a substance abuse setting

In his status report to politicians, Garåsen provided information that there are challenges associated with the spread of the infection, especially within the drug environment in the city.

– We see some spread of infection in connection with small partnerships between friends and co-workers, in addition to internal infection in homes. There is no news in relation to those infected in the area of the party, but in the area of drugs, 11 cases have been registered at Christmas. We cannot use coercion on this target group, but we have notified, for example, the Church City Mission of challenges related to this, Garåsen said at the presidency meeting.

He noted that there are a few in the drug arena who are struggling to remain calm, but that the municipality follows the closest.

– We will process to set an example. It can have an educational effect on inhabitants who do not comply with the orders and regulations that have been given to them.

– The situation is serious and the police must prioritize this, said Nordvedt, who received the support of several politicians in the presidency.

– We will discuss and consider whether we should reduce the number of contacts that people can have for a week, Sand told VG just before the meeting.

Infection control physician and municipal chief physician Rehn confirms that action will most likely be taken. – We have had 39 cases from December 21 to 28. Above all we know the chains of infection. But measures will probably be introduced, without me being more specific than that, according to Rehn.

Students worry

The upcoming influx of students of more than 20,000 students heading to Trondheim in the coming weeks also worries politicians.

– As the host city, we have taken the necessary measures and have a good collaboration with NTNU, says municipal director Morten Wolden in Trondheim during the meeting.

Most students will arrive between January 4-11.

– The first students (from abroad) who have arrived have been locked in quarantined hotels. It has worked well, says health director Helge Garåsen.

Before the New Year’s weekend, his advice is ready to avoid infection:

– If there are many people gathered and drunk, then I would stay away from such events, said Garåsen, who also told about the harassment of some residents.

– Now we get inquiries that some have a tradition of having guests on New Year’s Eve and want a dispensation. This is an example of people who do not understand the situation or who do not want to follow the rules whenever they apply. Most people understand this, but we are also harassed by people who think the measures are bad. It is difficult, but it will be more difficult if we do not follow the measures, says Garåsen.

In Trondheim, among other things, measures have been introduced that mean that people must have social contact with a maximum of ten people for a week.
