– The government now advises against unnecessary domestic travel. But major trips, like going home for Christmas, can be a necessary trip for the individual, writes the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) on its website on Saturday.
Here, FHI publishes its infection control tips for domestic travel.
– Wait with the visit to the nursing home
In some areas of Norway, such as Oslo and Bergen, there is now a lot of infection going on. At the same time, there are many municipalities that have hardly had contagion.
– Traveling from an area with a lot of infection to an area with little infection poses a risk of spread, regardless of whether you cross a national border, says NIPH Chief Physician Trude Arnesen.
– In such cases, you must remember that the first ten days after the trip you have a greater risk than those around you of becoming infected, even if you feel completely healthy, says Arnesen.
Arnesen tells NRK that he understands that it can be difficult to keep the odometer with his older parents during Christmas dinner and gift-giving.
– These distance tips can be difficult to follow. It may be easier to postpone a visit to your grandmother’s nursing home for 10 days after you return home. But if they are your own parents, it is more difficult and then you have to think in advance how to deal with it, says Arnesen.
– Should the time spent in the same room or house as people in the risk group be limited?
– The main advice is to reduce contact. The closer and longer you are inside, the greater the risk. Of course, spending less time together is less risky, but spending a lot of time with someone who is in the risk group, says Arnesen.
– Drive your own car if you can
Also on the trip home for Christmas, it is important to think about protecting yourself and others from infection.
– The same applies here. The less you are in contact and the shorter the time, the better. For those who can drive their own car, I would recommend that they do so.
Young children who may have a hard time maintaining the rules of infection, but want to visit their grandparents, can.
– Young children are less important in spreading infections. The most important thing is that adults and older youth keep a good distance. Nor would I recommend that grandchildren who come straight from the Oslo pot go straight to a small township nursing home. They should also wait 10 days, says Arnesen.
Precautions
The NIPH advises those who come from areas with high infection pressure to take precautions when visiting other parts of the country with fewer infections.
In addition to reducing the number of people you meet, you should also keep a distance of two meters from people in the risk group. You also have to be aware of the symptoms and have a low threshold to test yourself.
– Capacity will vary, but there is still absolutely fantastic testing capacity in Norway. Municipalities have made a solid effort to set up a good contingency plan, says Arnesen.
FHI also asks people to have a plan for where they can isolate themselves or go into quarantine, if it becomes relevant during Christmas.
