– The message from the Upper North is, in the best of cases, half done, but it is more painful. They have a good overview of the region, the possibilities, and a list of things already adopted at the Storting. But measures and solutions are lacking, Cecilie Myrseth, a Labor Party parliamentary representative in Troms, tells TV 2.
The High North report sets the course and framework for High North’s policy for years to come. The message was titled “Norwegian People, Opportunities and Interests in the North”, and emphasizes how important it is to avoid emigration from the North, but also to increase housing.
One of the concrete measures presented by the government is that they will launch an investment fund with state and private capital that will be managed from northern Norway.
The Center Party believes that the content of the message is actually gossip.
– It was a party speech with no content, so I really think they could have saved up for this. This will only be a mockery of northern Norway, says the parliamentary representative, Sandra Borch (Sp), on TV 2.
– We have a government that has distanced itself from northern Norway. In several cases, such as the forced merger of Troms and Finnmark, they have reached out and listened to the people of the north, he says.
Fear of the people dying: – We don’t have many alternatives
– Fail in Northern Norway
Borch believes that the government has failed northern Norway for eight years.
– Conservatives and the government have followed a very centralizing policy for the past seven years, which has hit our region hard. If the government wants to get serious about northern Norway, it must start by listening to those of us who live here, says Borch.
The Center Party believes that the government is talking about northern Norway at a distance and recommends that they travel more frequently to northern Norway, not just when they are reporting on the High North.
– It’s a long distance, and you hear it in the way they talk about Northern Norway, even today. It is quite surprising when the Prime Minister and various ministers use terms like “those from the north” and “people from the north”. It is clear that conservatives and the government are not taking seriously or seeing the consequences of the centralizing policy they have pursued for the past seven years. The Conservatives have been a disaster for the districts, says Borch.
He goes to the elections by train to Tromsø
The Center Party is the largest in Tromsø
Borch lives in Tromsø and is receiving increased support from the city’s inhabitants. On Friday, Nordlys presents a completely recent poll, showing that the Center Party is emerging in the largest city in northern Norway.
– This is a very serious warning for the government: they are about to lose northern Norway. When even urban Tromsø, with a highly educated population, says that the Center Party is their party of choice, then this must be followed by active politics. If not, I fear that the ruling parties will rage in the north during the elections, Nordlys political editor Skjalg Fjellheim tells TV 2.
