Total confusion about flight ban: airlines are selling new tickets

On December 20, the Swedish authorities introduced an entry ban from the UK, to prevent a mutated crown variant from spreading to Sweden.

On Saturday, a British Airways plane landed at Arlanda in Stockholm.

There were 33 passengers on board the plane. Four of them traveled to Finland and the remaining 29 were allowed to leave the Swedish airport. None of them were tested for the coronavirus.

Fear that the vaccine will be less effective: – We are concerned

– We have no idea how it could have happened, Swedish border police chief Patrik Engström told Aftonbladet when the plane landed.

On Sunday, Aftonbladet writes that the Ryanair company still sells airline tickets for two planes that are scheduled to land at Skavsta airport in Stockholm on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

According to the newspaper, there is complete confusion over who will handle passengers arriving in Sweden from the UK.

On Sunday, the mutated virus was also detected in Norway. According to the municipal chief doctor Jan Helge Dale in Kinn municipality, it has been tested in Kinn and in Oslo.

Pointing at each other

In the wake of Saturday’s incident, the Swedish border police referred to the health service in Stockholm municipality, hoping that they could answer questions about quarantine rules for passengers coming from the UK.

Sweden introduces comprehensive measures

The municipality responded that they cannot demand health checks from people who come from a specific geographical area.

The Swedish public health authority believes it can do nothing more than encourage passengers to get tested, again pointing to the regions of Sweden and the Swedish Ministry of Transport.

Stockholm region press secretary Hanna Fellenius says neither the public health authority nor the Stockholm region have contacted the passengers who landed in Sweden on Saturday.

It also says that infection control is the responsibility of the passengers.

– They’ll isolate themselves and test themselves, and then test themselves again after five days, says Fellenius.

Löfven: – The authorities must take care of it

During a press conference on Sunday, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven was asked why the British Airways plane landed in Stockholm.

The stoppage of direct flights from the United Kingdom continues

– It’s the airline that breaks the rules. I do not know if they have misinterpreted the regulation, but there is no doubt what the legal provision means, he replied.

– It is the Ministry of Transport and Communications that should take care of this, simply because it is an airline that has made the mistake, continued the Prime Minister.

British Airways has canceled all flights to Sweden. But for now, the Ryanair trip seems to be going well.

The Transport and Communications Ministry says it will do nothing to stop Ryanair flights, despite the fact that “the flight ban applies to both Ryanair and British Airways.”

– It is not allowed to transport passengers from the UK to Sweden. But we cannot prohibit the sale of tickets. If the planes land in Sweden, we will contact the British aviation authorities. But it has not happened yet and we cannot react to a violation that has not occurred, says Mikael Andersson, press officer at the Ministry of Transport.

It is still possible to order tickets

On Saturday, the Swedish Ministry of Transport contacted British Airways and Ryanair to avoid misunderstandings.

– I don’t know why it is possible to order tickets. But several countries have lifted the flight ban, so it may be that Ryanair believes the same will happen in Sweden, Gunnar Ljungberg, director of maritime transport and aviation in Sweden, tells Aftonbladet.

– But they know well what rules apply here, continues Ljungberg.

The Swedish entry ban currently applies until December 31.
