The shooting took place when police had to rescue a woman who had sought shelter on a rooftop, writes the AFP news agency.

A 48-year-old man opened fire on the first police patrol that arrived at the scene. One policeman died and another was injured.

So the man must have set the house on fire.

Le Parisien writes that the three policemen were killed when they came out to report domestic violence in Puy de Dôme in the Saint-Just municipality in central France on Wednesday night. It happened in an isolated town.

The Reuters news agency writes that when the police arrived at the scene, they were shot, at the same time that the house where the family lived burned.

Firefighters and police are on the scene, authorities report.
