All three tested positive in Oslo on Thursday.
– Players who have tested positive have been in quarantine at the player’s hotel since the national team match ended on Saturday. They did not want to risk spreading the infection by going home, and they have followed infection control rules with the use of bandages and practiced social distancing. The players have had no contact with other people, says national team doctor Ola Sand in an NFF news release.
All the players have been quarantined so far after Omar Elabdellaoui tested positive during the national team meeting. Now they remain isolated and the players’ clubs have been notified.
The three new tests come after the Norwegian Health Directorate set foot in motion last week when the national team squad would travel to Romania and Austria to play games in the national league.
After Elabdellaoui’s positive test, the entire team was detained to prevent the spread of the infection. Therefore, the Romania match was canceled and the match against Austria was played with a completely new national team.
NRK sportscaster Jan Petter Saltvedt believes the new cases are a sign that the health authorities’ recommendations were correct.
– I think the discussion that it was legal inside to deny that the national team traveled to Romania or not, has now ended, says Saltvedt.
Players abroad are informed
All the clubs of the national team players abroad are also informed about the infection that emerged at the national team meeting in Oslo and the quarantine regulations.
– UEFA’s protocol takes into account the risk of infection, but the goal is to eliminate more infections internally and prevent infection in society at large. In our case, the total isolation of the infected player was the first step. This was probably contagious the same day the positive test was taken (Thursday 11/12). The rules for infection control have been followed, but it is most likely that one or more players have had enough contact with the player in question to become infected. All three players are virtually symptom-free Friday night, Sand says later in the press release.
Misses matches
For Markus Henriksen, this means that he will not be able to watch the game against Brann on Tuesday night.
Henriksen’s teammate André Hansen, who was also at the national team meeting last week, has not been diagnosed with coronary heart disease.
– It’s a shame for both Markus and André, who have been in quarantine, and most now for Markus, who tested positive. The only thing that worries us is the health of the boys. So we know we have to do without them, and we are prepared for that, Åge Hareide tells NRK.
Although Hansen has tested negative, he must now be in quarantine for ten days. This means that he cannot play Brann either.
Hareide is aware that Rosenborg has strict rules on the crown for its players, and that it will now be important to follow up in the future.
– Football is exposed and I think we are lucky to overcome this pandemic. We just have to take care of ourselves so we can finish the season well, says Hareide.
Håvard Sakariassen in Bodø / Glimt confirms to Avisa Nordland that the two cases of infection will have no consequences for Sunday’s match against Strømsgodset. A match that can secure gold for Bodø yellow dresses.
