This weekend you can probably use the skis

Both StormGeo and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute believe in skiing in parts of Norway this weekend:

– The first winter month of December has begun to deliver the merchandise in the mountains. This weekend there will be good opportunities to take the first ski trip of the season, read a Twitter message from the Meteorological Institute on Thursday.

First snow, then uncertain

On-duty meteorologist Ina Ynnesdal at StormGeo tells TV 2 that the mountainous areas in Agder, Telemark and Buskerud are among the areas that receive the most:

– There will be a lot of snow towards the weekend. Next week is a bit more uncertain, considering how the temperature ends and if it could be too mild, he says.

At the same time, it is not necessary to travel that high to find the snow.

– I just checked and I see, among other things, that even Holmenkollen has received some snow. At the same time, it is “green” towards the center, he says.

– In the outer areas of, for example, Agder, the snow line is now around 500 meters, and a little lower, up to 200 meters, at night. In inland areas, there is mostly snow and sleet, Ynnesdal says.

Season begins

In the alpine center of Hovden, it will also snow on Thursday, says general manager Sture Bodahl-Pilegård.

– It has started little by little, and we look at it with pleasure. We have produced a lot of snow ourselves and managed, but we are happy with a bonus from the sky, he tells TV 2.

The alpine center opens its season on Saturday and will be open on weekends until Christmas. After that, the center is open every day until May.

He says that the ski center has a good collaboration with the municipality in the prevention of infections, and that they have staff to attend to it.

– We are equipped to accommodate a good portion of people. They won’t put us to bed, Bodahl-Pilegård says.

In vind

But if you choose to put on your skis, Ynnesdal asks you to keep one thing in mind:

– The wind can be a bit challenging. This applies mainly to Sørlandet, but also in areas like Hardangervidda, where there can be even small and stiff gales. Then it will calm down towards the end of the weekend.

– Snow and a lot of wind give little visibility, and it makes no sense to make a trip like this, at least at the top of the mountains where there are few trees, for example, he says.

According to StormGeo’s long-term forecast, there will likely be stays in western Norway and Trøndelag this weekend, but some precipitation on Saturday. In northern Norway, a lot of rain has been reported indoors.
