When even presenter Silje Nordnes (35) doesn’t know which guests she has in the studio, the stage is set for embarrassing mistakes on stage.

The goal of NRK’s new Saturday entertainment is to preserve the excitement around which celebrities are behind the masks. The steps to secure the secrets are then.

In all of NRK, only three people get started and in the production company only a handful.

– Is there something that has kept us from sleeping at night in the last six months, then it is precisely the idea that the secret should be leaked, admits the editor of the NRK project, Jan Egil Ådland, to VG.

Participants also do not know who they are competing against. All are collected in a secret place and separated.

– Then they change to a solid coat stamped with “don’t talk to me” and a mirrored visor. They should not be spoken to while in the studio, and communication is done in writing or signing, says Fremantle producer Kim Strømstad.

When participants arrive at Hellerudsletta’s studio in Lillestrøm, they walk directly into a mosquito netted wardrobe.

– Each has their own personal “expense” that coordinates the entire relocation. This also applies to the host and the panel. No one can go to the bathroom without being followed, says Strømstad.

Participants are masked at all times when in the study. The contracts also contain some extra points of secrecy and discretion, and all key people have had a security conversation with the manufacturer.

In the days leading up to live broadcasts, celebrities practice in secret locations.

– In the studio there are rehearsals with a cape and visor or with a complete costume. It’s a limited time how long they can stay in the masks at a time, explains Strømstad.

So far, the first episode of “Maskorama” has a total audience of 868,000. 114,000 of them have chosen to watch online, while 754,000 watched the premiere linearly. Susann Goksør Bjerkrheim (50) was the first out.

Iron carpet

Both the panelists and the spectators guessed with suspicion who was hiding in the different costumes.

For Silje Nordnes, it is important to be very sharp, as the statements of the live panelists are difficult to plan. In the first broadcast, it was all very funny for the presenter when the panel guessed Tshawe Baqwa.

– From Karpe Diem? Silje asked, before noticing the blister.

Tshawe is known to Madcon, not Karpe.

– Haha, it was incredibly embarrassing, admits Nordnes to VG.

– But I believe and hope that most of the people know, not least the two, that I know the difference between them and which duo they belong to. It became a classic example of a total iron curtain, and they can quickly become more. That kind of thing happens in the heat of battle, and I live well with it.

– How do you know that you have enough knowledge of the person behind the mask to be able to say their name when the mask is removed?

– I’m pretty sure of that, but a lot is happening and there are a lot of threads to hold on to, so the danger of the Iron Curtain is definitely there. Therefore, I receive a note with the name of the person inside the mask just before the reveal, Nordnes confesses.

She also has an ear plug where the maker can talk to her when needed.

Although it is very stressful for Nordnes not to know who the guests are, he also finds it comforting.

– It’s good not to be afraid to reveal something. I can keep a secret, it is not, but everyone can make a blast.

In the United States, movie star Mickey Rourke (68) removed his mask prematurely and surprised everyone in the studio. NRK cannot guarantee itself against the same “scandal”.

– But I think that all our masked heroes want to be with them as long as possible, so I will be surprised if something like this happens in Norway, says Jan Egil Ådland.

Producer Strømstad says it was surprisingly easy to get participants.

– In general, the masked people experience a freedom in which the face for once is not in the center, he says.

And for viewers wondering if the contestants actually sing live behind the masks, it can be said that do the.

– It is extremely demanding, for which they deserve all the credit. Both the visibility and the warmth and to some extent the air are a challenge, and something we spend a lot of time on when we make costumes, says Strømstad.

Participants can choose the costumes themselves and have been involved the entire time while designer Kjell Nordstrøm (58) and his team have worked. The hopefuls also have a say in the team in choosing most songs, even if they have to tackle a few challenges along the way.

What participants get in installments is also secret.

– It is a matter between each participant and the producer, says Jan Egil Ådland.

It remains to be seen if viewer interest remains until episode two. The VG reviewer was lukewarm and got 3.
