Italy’s Giovanni Visconti fled in horror after a freak accident during Matera’s sixth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Thursday.

After the stage, he posted a photo on his Instagram story, where he had inserted an Allen key through the hole he made in his shoe during the stage.

– May I say that I am lucky to have reached Matera on my own two feet? A horror that thankfully remained just that, Visconti said according to Cycling Weekly after the finale.

In the photo he posted, Visconti writes that he does it to recreate what he looked like when an iron bar went through his shoe during the stage.

– With an Allen key, I recreated my accident today, while driving over 60 km / h downhill … just so you understand what happened to me and how lucky I was.

The iron bar that originally made the hole must have been 0.5 cm in diameter and at least 20 cm long.

– A few more millimeters and I don’t want to think about how it could have been, writes Visconti, who hopes that his accident will be the last for the team at this year’s Giro.

See you tomorrow, I hope the black cloud hovering over the Vini Zabu-KTM team is blown away by the wind, Visconti wrote after the stage that went off the track on Thursday.

Fortunately, the team did well on Friday’s crosswind stage. It didn’t go so well on Tuesday, where it was a windy experience for Visconti’s teammates Luca Wackermann and Etienne van Empel.

They were brought down by a flying fence after a helicopter threw it onto the road.

British break winner

On Saturday’s stage, Alex Dowsett took a risk when he drove only 20 kilometers from the finish. The reward was victory on Saturday’s stage at the Giro d’Italia.

The British rider had spent much of the day on a break with five other riders. When he suddenly gambled and ran away, none of the others managed to hold out.

Dowsett, 32, represents the Israel Start-Up professional team. He was one minute and 16 seconds ahead of the next man on the results charts. Local Italian Salvatore Puccio from the Ineos team came in second.

This is the second time that Dowsett has won a stage of the Giro, but the previous one returned in 2013.

Saturday’s break was supposed to go after 22 kilometers. The stage was of a mountainous type and passed between the two coastal cities of Giovinazzo and Vieste in southern Italy. The stretch was 200 kilometers.

Quick-Step rider João Almeida continues to lead the overall Giro d’Italia. The Portuguese has 43 seconds less than the Spanish Pello Bilbao.

Earlier Saturday, it was announced that combined candidate Simon Yates is infected with coronary heart disease. The British are thus out of the race.
