The unrest in Malmö has subsided

The case is being updated.

On Friday night, several hundred people gathered in the Rosengård district, threw stones at police and set cars and tires on fire. The entire night was marked by unrest in the district after a Koran, according to police, was burned nearby.

Police say about 300 people participated in the riots. A minority threw stones and flaming objects at the police, who responded by advancing on the protesters and arresting some 15 people. It is unclear if anyone was injured in the riots.

By 3 p.m. Saturday, the situation had calmed down and clean-up could begin in the area.

No entry

Danish right-wing extremist Rasmus Paludan was arrested on the same day at the border with Sweden and denied entry.

He was supposed to have attended a meeting in the square organized by Swedish street artist Dan Park, who had previously been convicted in Sweden of inciting ethnic groups.

The plan was to burn a bacon-wrapped Quran, an undertaking for which Paludan has been responsible several times before in Denmark. Instead, Paludan was barred from entering Sweden for two years, according to Sydsvenskan.

After Paludan was arrested, an unannounced demonstration took place at Stortorget in Malmö.

Square meeting stopped

No one has been arrested for an alleged Quran burning in Emilstorp near Rosengård, which police believe may be one of the causes of the unrest.

Already on Wednesday, the police decided to stop the meeting of Paludan and his plaza, and on Friday the police received the support of the court and denied him permission for the meeting for security reasons. A total of 18 Muslim organizations protested against the demonstration plans and informed the organizers.

– The demonstration in Stortorget did not have permission, so the police decided to disband it, says Stefan Sintéus in the Malmö police.

Six people were arrested on suspicion of violating the Swedish racism clause, which in Sweden is called “incitement against ethnic groups”.

The Imam tried to calm the situation.

Police say both the burning of the Koran and the Stortorget event have upset many, but that it is still unfortunate that people turn their minds to the authorities.

– The destruction and fear of the evening and night riots have affected all the residents of Malmö, says Sintéus.

According to the SVT reporter in Malmö, an imam came to the area to try to calm things down.

Investigate crimes

Police say they are now cooperating with the municipality, associations and religious communities and are working hard to restore security in Malmö.

– We are now investigating the crimes that have been committed and we are working to ensure that we still have a calm situation in Malmö, says Sintéus in the police.

Paludan’s Tight Course party was founded in 2017 and will ban Islam and deport all Muslims. Paludan was sentenced earlier this year to three months in prison for defamation and racist statements against Muslims during a demonstration in Frederikssund.
