The infection in Blindern Studenterhjem started after a student visited her last Monday. The person in question does not live in the bedroom. So far, eight people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

On Saturday of the same week a party was held in the bedroom.

NRK has received confirmation that there have been people at this event who have probably been carriers of the virus, without their knowledge.

Bud in the bedroom

The event was approved by the district superintendent.

– We had a meeting with the district on Thursday where we presented our plans. Then there were 71 participants who were going to this party. The district superintendent said the event could be held because we had very good infection control plans and measures, says Dorm Leader Gro Osland.

The Nordre Aker district superintendent confirms that the party was approved, but emphasizes that it is unfortunate that there have been cases of infection in the student dormitory.

– If we had known this before the event, we would have said no to the party, says District Chief Medical Officer Tom Sundar.

Now the parties are over

On Thursday morning, Councilor Raymond Johansen held a press conference in which he said the pressure of infection in Oslo has been great lately.

In the last 24 hours, 80 new cases of contagion have been registered in the capital.

The city council leader also asked the people of Oslo to leave the Christmas table this year and have as little social contact as possible in the future.

At the press conference, it was also stated that the infection control measures implemented by the municipality will continue. Among other things, it is mandatory to wear a mask on public transport if you cannot keep your distance.

Restaurants must register guests with their name and phone number. This is to make it easier to detect infections.

Events with more than 50 participants without fixed seats are also prohibited.

The bed in quarantine

Odin Haga is among the 200 who are now in quarantine. For the past three years he has lived in the bedroom.

– Now we are all in quarantine after the outbreak, says Haga.

He meets NRK right outside the bedroom. Residents can go out, but they try to get students who aren’t quarantined to help out with actions and the like.

Now they serve them food outside the door.

– We have breakfast around nine. Dinner comes around three and four, says Verdal’s student in Trøndelag.

Typically, residents eat in a common dining room. The student dormitory itself can be described as a guest house.

Increase nationwide

At midnight on Wednesday, 15,012 people infected with corona were registered in this country. There was an increase of 229 in the last 24 hours.

In the last two days, the increase is 408 reported cases, according to figures from the National Infectious Disease Notification System (MSIS).

On Tuesday, it emerged that a third of Oslo residents with coronary heart disease do not know where they were infected. The number is too high, said health adviser Robert Steen (Labor). However, he did not want to describe the numbers as dramatic.

Health Director: wait for measures

Health Director Bjørn Guldvog is concerned about the increase in infection cases in Oslo.

– I know that the city council is very close to the situation and has local knowledge about the outbreaks. I hope they take action to meet the challenge that exists in the city and prevent us from spreading a large number of hidden infections in the population, Guldvog tells NRK.

The health director says it is too early to tell if it is a continuing trend.

– The situation has been relatively stable in recent weeks, but at a slightly elevated level.

– It should have been preferably in the reading room.

Blindern Studenterhjem has single rooms, combined rooms and double rooms. Do and most of the residents live in single rooms, he says.

– Most have individual rooms between 15 and 20 square meters, says the student just outside the dormitory.

– Is it okay to study from home?

– Not perfect, we’d rather be in the reading room, says Haga.
