LATEST: Health and Sanitation Minister Bent Høie now confirms that they are following the Storting’s decision, but Høie believes it is too early.
– I think that the proposal to abolish the ban on alcoholic beverages comes too early. The infection situation is unstable and this increases the risk of spreading the infection. But we will continue to follow up on the decision of the parliamentary majority, writes the Minister of Health and Care Services in a press release.
A majority in the Storting voted to allow municipalities with low infection pressure to allow alcohol service in relation to food service on Tuesday.
The decision was made after the government decided Monday that national infection control measures that were introduced in early January should largely continue.
It included a national bar stop.
FRP leader Siv Jensen, who presented the proposal at the Storting, says she is surprised by the majority.
FRP – a pleasant surprise
– There is no reason to have a national ban on alcoholic beverages when there is such a large variation in infection and it is at least sensible to be able to open to serve alcohol along with food in places that have organized infection control rules, says Jensen.
For NRK, Jensen says there is a difference between municipalities with high and low infection pressure. Jensen believes that municipalities can assess for themselves what carries high infection pressure.
– If you can sit in a restaurant or cafe and get a plate of meatballs, you should also be able to get a beer or a glass of wine. It does not change the infection factor. Pubs and bars are something quite different, and we haven’t taken the initiative to do so either, says Jensen.
In addition to Frp, Ap SV, MDG, Senterpartiet and Rødt voted in favor of the proposal. Write NTB.
Jensen says it was a pleasant surprise that the Labor Party voted in favor of the proposal.
– I think, first and foremost, it’s good news for restaurants across the country who are struggling with the hook-in-the-door idea, says Jensen.
Høie: The Storting is responsible when the government is overruled.
Health Minister Bent Høie says the Storting’s decision will be implemented at midnight on Friday night. But you do not agree with the decision:
– It is too early to open nationally to serve. We remain in an uncertain situation. International experience and it’s bad in this area, Health Minister Bent Høie tells NRK.
– Do you think that the parliamentary majority has a responsibility if this leads to an outbreak of infection?
– The Storting is responsible when it reviews government decisions and advice in this area, but the government will, of course, follow up on the decisions the Storting has made, says Høie.
Trondheim experienced record infection rates at Christmas. Now the infection is less, but Labor Party Mayor Rita Ottervik says she does not want to use the opposition’s decision to allow the spill.
– We introduced a bar stop starting at 10pm on Christmas Day. I think we should continue like this if the Storting promises to stop drinking altogether, Ottervik writes in an SMS to NRK.
Trondheim Mayor Will Not Lift Ban
Ottervik knew before Christmas that he wanted the municipalities themselves to have a greater opportunity for their own rules outside of the national ones. Today’s decision at the Storting, he believes, is a step in that direction.
– But that does not mean that we should seize that opportunity. We must consider our own local situation. For municipalities that have not had an infection, it does not make sense to have such strict rules as we have had in a period when we have had a lot of infection.
There was disagreement over the liquor ban among professional authorities. NIPH recommended removing the national ban on alcoholic beverages, but the Norwegian Health Directorate wanted to continue it for another two weeks.
– Now the government must immediately follow up on the Storting’s decision. There is no reason why municipalities with low infection pressure should not have the opportunity to serve alcohol in connection with food service after this decision, says Jensen.
– The government must follow up immediately
Parliamentary Representative Marit Arnstad (Sp) says they record that there have been several professional recommendations regarding the ban on drinking.
– We understand that in areas with low infection, it feels stressful that alcohol cannot be served with food, Arnstad tells NRK.
– Will the parties that voted feel responsible if the infection increases as a result of this?
– It is a risk that all parties must live with when considering measures. But we found that there are several professional recommendations in this area, says Arnstad.
On Monday, the government also unveiled a new crisis package for the business community. It was also invaded by the opposition.
The majority in the Storting wanted to extend the redundancy regime and the increase in the unemployment benefit rate until 1 October. The government proposed on July 1.
The opposition also agreed to extend the compensation scheme for companies in difficulty until July 1.
