The cases of infection are related to the Lerøy slaughterhouse in Jøsnøya in the municipality of Hitra, the municipality indicates on its website.

A total of five people have been diagnosed with corona infection at the slaughterhouse. Ole Laurits Haugen, mayor of Hitra municipality, reports to VG on Saturday evening. The first three cases were tested on Friday.

– It is a confusing and demanding situation in which we are. We just have to take the day to day now, says Haugen.

Massive tests of employees at the slaughterhouse and people who are considered close contacts have now started. Between 160 and 170 people were tested on Saturday, says the mayor.

– Samples are being transported to St. Olav Hospital tonight, and we’ve asked St. Olav to prioritize. We hope the first test results will arrive tomorrow.

The municipality is now closing schools, the after-school program, and kindergartens. This means there will be classes at home on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Hitra’s nursing homes and housing associations will also be temporarily closed to visitors until the municipality has a better overview.

– This will last through the weekend in the first instance, says Haugen.

In addition, the town hall, the library, the youth base, the cinema and the swimming pool will be closed until Christmas.

The mayor points out that Hitra has so far had few cases of contagion: only seven cases have been detected in the municipality since the pandemic broke out.

– All these seven are related to import infections, he says.

According to Haugen, it is too early to say anything about any of the cases that have been tested in recent days related to the import infection.
